Summer Programs

evoking the
wisdom
of body &
imagination

"Through art and dance we can reclaim our primal heritage and move towards a more embodied future. As we tap into the deep sources of bodily wisdom through creative art expression, we dance the renewal, recreation, and healing of ourselves and our world."
             - Anna Halprin

Since ancient times the power of dance, storytelling, painting, and ritual have been used to reveal, heal and teach. In our approach to movement-based expressive arts, we work with the interplay between life experience and art expression to uncover and explore the compelling themes and questions in our lives. Each art medium - movement/dance, visual arts and creative writing - becomes a vehicle through which we encounter ourselves and shape new possibilities. Our dances, drawings and poetry hold metaphors and messages that allow us to reflect on and dialogue with our history, who we are now and the changes we would like to embody in our lives.

Offered every summer, this program includes a variety of workshops representing different aspects of the Halprin Process. These workshops can be taken individually or as a whole. When taken in its entirety, the Summer Program provides a multifaceted view of the Tamalpa work and its many applications.

In Summer 2008, Tamalpa Institute offers a series of workshops presented in three parts: Empowering Creativity Through Dance with Anna Halprin, Self Portraits, and Movement & Expressive Arts in Nature. Additionally, we will be offering a fourth workshop, which is new: Tune Up, Tune In and Play- Paint, Poetry, Music and Song. For more information scroll down. Join us in dances of renewal for mind and heart, body and soul! To register, please click here or call the Tamalpa office at 415.457.8555.

Part 1 - Empowering Creativity Through Dance
Anna Halprin
June 23-26, $550
($500 early registration by June 5)
In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to create personal and group dances that grow from direct life experiences and are an expression of heightened creative awareness. Improvization, group interactions, visualization, and non-stylized movement will be used to generate dances and rituals that speak to the deep truth and knowing of our individual and collective bodies

Part 2 - Self Portraits
Jaime Nisenbaum
June 30-July 4, $550
($500 early registration by June 5)
In each one of us lives a story, a palette of images and experiences stored in our muscles and bones, organs and body parts. This workshop will engage participants in creative dialogues with their personal stories focusing on the experience and expression of the body. Through movement, drawing and poetry, participants will tap into a stream of symbolic and metaphoric images to explore current life themes and questions in an open and imaginative process. This approach allows new experiences and perspectives to emerge and invites positive change and action in our lives. This workshop culminates with the creation of a self-portrait, which is used as the basis for a final enactmet symbolizing the embodiment of a new vision of self to bring to one's daily life.

Part 3 - Movement & Expressive Arts in Nature
Jamie McHugh
July 13-17
Residential
Tuition: $550
($500 early registration by June 5)
Room & board: $300 (nonrefundable)

Our soma and psyche are reflections of the elements of nature. In the spectacular outdoor environment of the California Point Reyes Seashore, we will explore how we can embody and express our primal nature in a modern body. Each day we go to the beach to open our senses, reorganize our bodies and explore the elements. Using breath, sound, touch, movement and stillness practices, we create the conditions for spontaneous and authentic dances with the natural environment. The reflective use of drawing, poetry & dialogue deepens the connections between our creative expression and our life story. Away from the distractions of daily life, this immersion in the body and in the natural environment offers new resources and inspiration for our lives. This workshop may be of particular interest to artists, environmentalists, educators and those interested in exploring art and dance in nature.
