Message From the Director

"Do not be ashamed to dance while the world wages war. Yours is the movement we all fight for."
            - Jahan Khalighi, spoken word poet

As we usher in a new year I imagine that we all hold hopes for a future filled with more light, love and creative participation for all. The longing for those qualities in our individual lives is the longing of all humanity. It is an inevitable aspect of our personal and collective experience that struggle lives side by side with peace. Within each place of conflict also lives the seed of peace.  In what ways can we face the struggle and nurture the seed? How can we live with our differences without destroying each other? How can we step gently on the land?  What action can we take? What is our "call to arms"? These are challenges and questions that are as old as human life itself. So what could be now? I believe that to commit is itself a prayer, a dance, a revolt, releasing us from feelings of helplessness in the face of what may appear overwhelming. How then, as artists, educators, seekers, will we shape our revolt. What action might we take?  I would like to offer this challenge, that we each find a way to call out for change, and listen for the collective chorus so that our individual song is strengthened by the voices of all. My prayer for the new year , "Let freedom ring."
