Student Tuition Recovery Fund*
The State of California created the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) to relieve or mitigate economic losses suffered by California residents who were students attending schools approved by, or registered to offer Short-term Career Training with the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (Bureau).
You may be eligible for STRF if you are a California resident, prepaid tuition, paid the STRF fee, and suffered an economic loss as a result of any of the following:
- The school closed before the course of instruction was completed
- The school's failure to pay refunds or charges on behalf of a student to a third party for license fees or any other purpose, or to provide equipment or materials for which a charge was collected within 180 days before the closure of the school.
- The school's failure to pay or reimburse loan proceeds under a federally guaranteed student loan program as required by law or to pay or reimburse proceeds received by the school prior to closure in excess of tuition and other costs.
- The school's breach or anticipatory breach of the agreement for the course of instruction.
- There was a decline in the quality of the course of instruction within 30 days before the school closed, or if the decline began earlier than 30 days prior to closure, a time period of decline determined by the Bureau.
- The school committed fraud during the recruitment or enrollment or program participation of the student.
You may also be eligible for STRF if you were a student that was unable to collect a court judgement rendered against the school for violation of the Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education Reform Act of 1989.
You must pay the state-imposed fee for the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) if all of the following applies to you:
- You are a student who is a California resident and prepays all or part of your tuition either by cash, guaranteed student loans, or personal loans, and
- Your total charges are not paid by any third-party payer such as an employer, government program or other payer unless you have a separate agreement to repay the third party.
You are NOT eligible for protection from the STRF and you are not required to pay the STRF fee if either of the following applies:
- you are not a California resident,
- Your total charges are paid by a third party, such as an employer, government program or other payer, and you have no separate agreement to repay the third party.
Housing Information
Upon registration, students receive a local housing directory containing a list of possible housing opportunities in Marin County. Tamalpa Institute is not responsible for your housing. It is the student's responsibility to contact and set up their housing situation. The housing list is to assist you as much as possible with your housing needs during your studies at the Institute. Tamalpa Institute does not have any affiliation, written or verbal agreements with the people listed in our housing list. The current cost of renting a room in Marin County ranges from $500 $800 per month.
Attendance, Leave Of Absence, Assessment And Grading Policies
Students are expected to attend classes as scheduled as they would be expected to be present for work. Absences and tardiness will be recorded. Students failing to maintain satisfactory attendance will be counseled by the Director. If attendance fails to improve, the school director, acting at the discretion of the school management, may dismiss a student for unsatisfactory attendance. Re-admittance may be permitted if the cause of unsatisfactory attendance has been corrected. Makeup class work may be arranged by the student with approval of the instructor.
The progress or grading system by which a student can be evaluated and compared with another taking the same course is Pass / Fail. A certificate of completion will be issued upon satisfactory completion of the course. It is expected that you attend all sessions unless there is an emergency. Each day has its own unique life in the training, and the work, as we present it, is developmental so each day leads specifically into the next. Also, as an important member of a group learning environment, your absence will be felt. If you must miss a session or a day, inform the office and inform another group member who will give this information to the teacher. The information below specifies the minimum attendance requirements for each training:
Level 1 Training - Weekend Format
Students must attend 205 of the 234 contact hours.
Level 1 Training - Immersion Format
Students must attend 270 of the 300 contact hours.
Level 2 Training - Weekend Format
Students must attend 264 of the 288 contact hours.
Level 2 Training - Immersion Format

Leave of Absence: Students enrolled in our training programs are permitted to take a leave of absence that amounts to a maximum 15% of the total amount of hours of each program. If a students exceeds this maximum, he or she will be advised to leave the program and re-apply for the next training. Refunds are prorated.
Complaint Procedures
If a student has a problem with a teacher or another student, he/she should first address the issue with the appropriate party. If a satisfactory resolution is not met, an active listening session between the parties with a mediator will be held upon request.
If a student has a problem with the training program the student should deliver a verbal or written statement of his/her complaint to the office which will be reviewed and answered by the Assistant Director, within one week of the complaint.
If complaints are not resolved satisfactorily, students can appeal to the Bureau of Private Postsecondary Vocational Educational (BPPVE). See address and phone above.
Resource Library
A resource library containing books, articles, periodicals, videos, papers and dissertations on the topic of expressive arts and related fields is available to students throughout the year during class time. Students are encouraged to borrow these materials to complement their education.
Student Records
Tamalpa Institute maintains current records of students of the past five years in its office location in Kentfield, CA. These records are available to students during regular office hours. Older records, along with copies of current records, are kept in storage and are available upon request.
